AFB is seeking a Director of Development to work in its Resource Development & Communications/Community Engagement department. This position is based in AFB’s Washington, DC Metro Office located in Arlington, VA. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing day-to-day operations and staff for AFB’s fundraising program. This position reports to the Chief Community Engagement Officer.
Collaborate closely with the Chief Community Engagement Officer to develop and implement fundraising strategies, initiatives, and goals aligned with AFB’s strategic direction; play a lead role in conceptualizing and creating an effective departmental structure that will carry the organization into its centennial and beyond.
Support the CEO and Chief Community Engagement Officer with board and major donor relations; participate in Board Development Committee planning and meetings.
Assess and oversee donor relations program; ensure accuracy of donor records and data management and ensure timely and appropriate gift acknowledgement.
Oversees the direct mail and e-giving programs; work closely the Chief Community Engagement Officer and the Director of Communications to ensure accuracy and consistency in messaging.
Assess and manage individual and institutional giving programs, including personal engagement with major donors.
Manage and ensure effective fundraising cultivation events and annual fundraising gala.
Supervise departmental staff, adhering to AFB’s policies and practices regarding recruitment and orientation; communicating values, expectations, policies, information, goals, mission and strategy; supporting staff in areas of job responsibilities, problem resolution, and benefits; identifying professional development opportunities; ensuring policies and procedure compliance; and addressing areas requiring improvement.
Carry out administrative responsibilities: develop and implement annual plan initiatives and budgets; ensure that income objectives are met through effective tracking systems, participate in weekly tactical meetings, communicate information and vision through the department and organization; and help ensure departmental compliance with all AFB’s policies and procedures.
Perform other duties and projects as assigned.
Equipment Used: Word, Excel, Microsoft Outlook, and NetSuite and or other new Donor Database Software
Bachelor’s degree in business administration, marketing, public relations, communications, or other related field or equivalent. Minimum of 10 years of fundraising experience. Proficiency in direct mail, individual giving, institutional giving, special events and data management. Experience in the non-profit sector strongly preferred. Knowledge of or interest in disability-related issues also preferred.
Must be team-oriented, organized self-starter, able to adhere to deadlines and manage multiple projects simultaneously. Attention to detail and a careful, confident, precise working style are essential; ability to think strategically is required. The ability to work with top-level volunteers and donors necessary. Supervisory ability and experience required.
