The George Mason University Office of Advancement and Alumni Relations is looking for an enthusiastic and energetic person for a Director of Donor Relations and Stewardship position. The Director of Donor Relations and Stewardship works with all members of the Advancement team and various university offices to implement donor relations and stewardship activities and programs that foster longstanding and successful relationships between George Mason University and its donors.
The Director of Donor Relations and Stewardship plays a critical role within the Office of Donor Relations and Advancement Communications, working to maintain and enhance the university’s relationships with major donors through documentation, acknowledgement, recognition, and reporting. The Director oversees all donor relations and stewardship activities and operations, and supervises the Assistant Director of Donor Relations and Stewardship, and the Advancement Programs Specialist.
In addition, the Director of Donor Relations and Stewardship will be responsible for implementing, executing and maintaining donor relations and stewardship activities for special constituency donors including, but not limited to; donors recognized through annual, planned giving and cumulative recognition societies, VIP donors and members of relevant boards.
Overseeing all central university donor relations and stewardship operations, including but not limited to:
Faculty/Staff Stewardship; and
Supervising, and providing mentoring and guidance, to the Assistant Director of Donor Relations and Stewardship and the Advancement Programs Specialist;
Implementing and managing maintenance of the AcademicWorks platform stewardship module;
Developing, implementing, executing, managing and evaluating communication and recognition programs for individual and group special constituency donors in collaboration with the Executive Director of Donor Relations and Advancement Communications;
Conceptualizing and executing appropriate donor recognition activities and events for donors in collaboration with the Executive Director of Donor Relations and Advancement Communications, and Director of Advancement Programs;
Designing, implementing and evaluating metrics and data related to all donor relations and stewardship activities and operations in conjunction with the Executive Director of Donor Relations and Advancement Communications and the Advancement Services team;
Working collaboratively with schools/colleges, the George Mason University Foundation and other university stakeholders to execute best practice communications, reporting and recognition activities for donors;
Ensuring that all donor relations and stewardship activities are recorded in Advance;
Implementing new recognition and stewardship efforts as appropriate;
Overseeing the preparation of invitation lists, mailing lists and data reports for use in all donor relations and stewardship activities;
Preparing, periodically reviewing, and updating departmental processes and procedures as related to donor relations and stewardship best practices;
Creating, implementing and maintaining systems to assist directors of development with donor relations and stewardship efforts;
Providing the highest level of responsiveness and customer service to internal and external constituencies;
Fostering lasting relationships between George Mason University and its donors and promoting positive attitudes toward giving;
Collaborating with colleagues in schools/units to design individual stewardship plans for major donors as needed;
Performing periodic benchmarking of peer institutions as needed;
Remaining current on donor relations and stewardship trends, strategies and services offered by other educational institutions and non-profits; and
Other duties as pertinent and necessary.
The Director should be creative, proactive, strategic, detail-oriented and consistent with a strong commitment to quality, timeliness, efficiency and effectiveness. S/he will have excellent verbal and written communication skills and mature judgment. S/he should be a critical and strategic thinker and possess strong time management and organizational skills, as well as a professional and courteous demeanor and the ability to work collaboratively with all university colleagues. S/he will also maintain working knowledge of best practices in the field of donor relations and stewardship.
Master’s degree, preferably in English, communications or journalism, or equivalent years of relevant work experience;
Strong editing and writing skills as demonstrated through writing samples; and
Occasional staffing of events and other work outside of normal business hours.
Demonstrated significant experience working in donor relations and stewardship;
Previous experience in higher education advancement, strategic communications and event planning; and
Familiarity with Advance, AcademicWorks, Orbis (Business Objects) and iModules.
